There seems to be a recent shift in the WH messaging about the pandemic. Mark Meadows (WHCOS) this morning basically conceded that we can't control the viral spread, bringing up many comments on social media about "herd immunity". This "strategy" is horrible on many levels
1/
The formula for herd immunity is
"1 - 1/R0", where R0 is the reproduction number, basically the number of people that a single affected individual will infect. For COVID-19, that number is pretty high, somewhere between 2 and 5. Hence we would need approximately 60-80% rate
2/
of infection before we achieve herd immunity. Given the overall mortality of infected symptomatic patients (estimated conservatively) at 1-2%, that is a lot of dead people - in the millions given a 330 million population. A vaccine will mitigate that for sure
3/
but we are many months until we will have a safe and effective vaccine, and many weeks to months after that for us to manufacture, distribute and vaccinate. Until then, social isolation, masking, and contact tracing is what we have. For the official WH stance to be an
4/
an apparent surrender and let the chips fall where they may is so disheartening and counterproductive. On top of this we have the President accusing front line health workers of profiting off of COVID???
