This is the story of Fiadh O'Connor, a bright, beautiful two year old from The Ballagh, in Wexford, Ireland who has been fighting cancer since last Christmas.
Fiadh's mammy Laura is a teacher and her daddy Rory is a builder. Her favourite person in the world is her baby brother Páidí. Her best days are spent eating ice-cream, climbing everything & scooting around. But cancer has given her far too many bad days in her short life so far.
When Fiadh was 20 months old, her mammy noticed that her tummy looked a little swollen so she brought her to their GP. That GP visit unfortunately led to a visit to their local hospital in Wexford and then an ambulance ride to the main children's hospital in Ireland, Crumlin CHI.
There was a large mass in Fiadh's abdomen causing the swelling. After tests and scans Fiadh was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive children's cancer. She had a 14cm tumour & the cancer had already spread widely into her bones, bone marrow and her lungs.
Fiadh's parents got the worst news imaginable, their cherished 20 month old daughter had only a 50/50 chance of surviving this cancer. The only option was to immediately start treatment to try to shrink that tumour. Within one hour of diagnosis, Fiadh started chemotherapy.
For many weeks, Fiadh stayed in hospital getting the most intensive treatment that her tiny body could handle. She was in immeasurable pain; she stopped moving, eating and talking for periods of time and was on daily medication.
Fiadh's baby brother Páidí was only 12 weeks old when she was diagnosed, but he had to be left behind with family in Wexford so Fiadh's parents could be with her in Dublin. Life just stopped for their entire family, there was no Christmas.
But Fiadh is a tiny superhero and she has fought through every difficult stage so far. +150 days in hospital, 50 days of chemotherapy, 3 different surgeries, 2 stem cell transplants, +30 blood and platelet transfusions, and over 12 weeks of total isolation in Crumlin Hospital.
Today Fiadh is still being fed through a tube as she has been every day since December. She needs 24 hour care and coronavirus has made things harder. She still has to go through 3 weeks of Radiotherapy with a general anaesthetic every day & then 6 months of Immunotherapy.
And even when she comes through that, she will still be faced with the fact that this cancer has a dangerously high relapse rate. If she relapses, her chances of surviving it again are much lower than 50/50. So we need to get rid of every trace of cancer from Fiadh's body.
There is a specific treatment for Fiadh's cancer which is designed to seek out and target any residual neuroblastoma cancer cells in Fiadh's body. This treatment is still in the trial phase & is only available through the Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre New York
So we need to raise €375,000 to get Fiadh access to this trial. We know it's a lot, but this treatment has to be delivered gradually in many trips over two years. Please help us get our girl well, get her healthy again & give her family back their lives #futureforfiadh
