Fast forward to age 40. Fuck. Middle age. Still not huge. Still with excuses. Body showing first signs of wear.
Starting far too late, but never too late, i steeled myself for another attempt at beefing up.
Found a decent muscle gym near me and started the work.

I started in autumn/winter - and little hack there - great time to start. If you can get a routine of regular gym going during the winter then it gets much easier as the days get lighter and warmer.
But don’t start with the resolutioners - ever!!

And by regular, I mean “without fail, no excuses, you will go, you will hit the target, 3, 4, 5 times a week (select one), you will constantly seek to improve your diet” - consistency is KEY, 100%. Nothing else but that focus.
Short term goals are great, but you need to start to develop long term thinking. This shit takes TIME (unless you’re a little beefy shortarse with amazing genetics).
I developed a mind hack which I’ll share with you...

Every birthday comes round and you get the same old “ok yeah thanks that’s lovely” gifts.
There’s really one thing you want more than anything - and that’s a better body. And there’s only one person who can give you that gift, and that’s you in the past.

So that’s what you’re doing - you’re giving future you the gift he’s always wanted. A banging rack.

So that got me through the first year of getting up at 6am to go lift before work four times a week.
Yes it was hard. Yes I always wanted to quit. Rewards were slow (tall guys take a long while to fill out - that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it, pathologically).

But eventually sometime after the first year, I got to that magical nirvana - gym was now a habit, it was something I HAD to do or I would feel weird. Not going felt strange.
After that, gym started to be the fun/work time. An empty gym full of weights started to be a joy.

There are still things I struggle with of course. Leg day remains my nemesis - I’ve never learned to love it. But I’ve never skipped it. Ok, maybe once or twice I have. Happy now? I have ridiculously long limbs that are fucking ridiculous for bodybuilding.
I’ve had a few trainers in the past (currently trainer-less because I can’t justify the expense) - and with both my long term trainers I’ve ended up always doing legs with them, because they quickly worked out I need no pushing on upper body, but...
Advice on trainers - if you can afford one and you can find a good one, absolutely go for it. My personal experience is that it’s best if you get one who is roughly the same height/frame build as you - they will have first hand understanding of what is hard for you.
I guess the big question many of you have is “so what about... um... y’know... supplements?”
Not something I’m going to publically go into detail on - other than to say that if you want to build a decent amount of muscle past a certain age (mid thirties) then extra test helps.

I’ve noticed an alarming lack of knowledge around the subject of growing bigger and what it takes to do that - and I can’t educate people in a tweet thread, so I’ll leave that to others.
I will say though that performance enhancing drugs are used a lot more than is really known.

Generally speaking though - if you’re wondering if a guy has used PEDs, then he probably has. If they swear blind that they’re “natural” (*cough* Mike O’Hern) then they’re lying.
PEDs are not the EVIL that they’re made out to be. They don’t turn you into a raging lunatic. You can’t INSTANTLY DIE from using them. They can be used extremely safely. It’s interesting to read many guys being judgemental about PED usage, but not having a care about party drugs.
Also fascinating to see a recent twitter condemnation pile-on about someone being open about site enhancement oil usage - the same guys then heaping praise on guys with siliconed dicks... only one of these things can kill you instantly...
