/8 Paediatric FAQ “Does a runny nose mean my child does NOT have Covid-19?”. Data from the #ISARIC4C study of hospitalised children with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 may help.
/8 This diagram shows the overlap in symptoms in a subset of 496 kids with complete data for fever, cough and runny nose. 73 kids (15%) had a runny nose, but almost all of these kids also had either fever or a cough.
/8 In the main dataset of 651 kids, only 3 had runny nose and NO other symptoms. So if your child ONLY has a runny nose, they are very unlikely to have Covid-19.
/8 However, if your child has a runny nose AND fever or cough, they could still have Covid-19 and should be tested according to UK criteria.
/8 120 children (24%) in the study did not have fever, cough or runny nose. A reminder that fever and cough are pragmatic community testing criteria, not the only symptoms of Covid-19.
/8 These data are from hospitalised children. More community-based studies are needed to determine symptoms of mild Covid-19 in children.
