THE STORY OF DIVINE SURABHI MATA

In one of the previous chapters we have mentioned that after Rishi Dadhichi gave his bones to construct weapons to devtas for destroying Vritrasur they had called Surabhi cow to lick away the flesh. So who is Surabhi cow.
The next day of Diwali we celebrate Govardhan puja and worship Cows. This worshipped Cow is Surabhi mata.

Surabhimata, as she is referred by this name, is the Aadi Gau. It is said that once when Krishna and Radha were in Vrindavan, Krishna had a strong urge to drink milk.
It is then that from his left side he created a Cow along with the Calf. This was Surabhi mata and her calf Manorath.

It is said that Sridama then took a new vessel and milked the cow. Whoever drank the divine milk was now Immortal (अजर, अमर). The milk would overflow.
So people started churning ghee. Even the ghee was so abundant that people started doing Yagya. This pleased the devtas.
While the cow was being milked the vessel broke and the overflowing milk created a pond which was called Kshir Sarovar where the gopika's would take a dip.
This Sarovar still exists in Golok. It was the Krida sthal of Kanha with the gopika's. There are ghats sorrounding it with stairs studded with precious stones. Krishna had created several Kamdhenu's. Gop's were born out of hair particles of Surabhi.
Krishna had worshipped Surabhi mata, so all the loks also started the worship of Surabhi mata. The next day of Diwali is dedicated to Surabhi mata and is celebrated as Govardhan puja.

The basic mantra of Surabhi Vandana is
ॐ सुरभ्यै नमः.
Those who worship Surabhi mata should also do a Japa of one lakh mantras. The puja ritual vedi should have a place for a pole where the cow is tied and a place for Shaligram.

It is said that in Varah Kalp that as per the Maya of Vishnu, Surabhi stopped giving milk to
all the three loks. The devtas went to Brahma to solve this problem. The devtas would remain hungry since Prithvi people stopped all the activities in the absence of milk.

The devtas were asked to pray to Surabhi mata.
As a result normalcy returned after Surabhi mata started the flow of river. The overflowing milk resulted in churning of more ghee. The increased ghee was used for Yagya, thus keeping the devtas satisfied.
People who regularly chant the strotras for Surabhi are blessed by abundance of all things in their lives.
