Funmilayo Ransome Kuti was born on this day in 1900. She was one of the most important leaders of Nigeria& #39;s anti-colonial struggle. She mobilized women against corruption, unjust tax on women etc through the Abeokuta Women& #39;s Union.
She and Eniola Soyinka were instrumental in women& #39;s movement building. Together they mobilized women against chiefs who abused their powers and against price controls against women who sold at markets. Both women are known as Fela and Wole& #39;s mothers. They were so much more.
She was also the first Nigerian woman who could drive. Mam& #39; Funmilayo& #39;s death will never not give me chills. She was in her 70s when soldiers through her out of a two storey high window. She never recovered from those injuries. It was all because Fela criticized the government.
It& #39;s also chilling because the scenes we& #39;ve seen in that country recently reveal the same cruel responses to criticism remain the same. Also I can& #39;t wrap my head around young men throwing someone old enough to be their granny out of a two-floor window.
