samhain takes place on october 31, and is a time honor those who have died and crossed over the veil. it’s a time to celebrate the cycle of life and death. it’s easier to communicate with the dead at this time as well, as the veil is thinned.

if you’d like to celebrate samhain (the witch’s new year) here are some ways you can honor this sabbat:

make an altar celebrating the end of the harvest:

• harvest foods; pumpkins, squash, root vegetables
• nuts, berries & dark breads
• dried leaves and acorns
• cornucopia filled with fruit and veggies
• mulled cider or wine

make an altar for your deceased loved ones and ancestors:

gather photos, heirlooms and other mementos of deceased loved ones. set them on your altar, along with black candles. light the candles in their memory. speak their names aloud and thank them for being part of your life.

visit a loved one at a cemetery:

honor the passing of family and friends by visiting and tending to their gravesite. call to mind memories and consider ways the loved one continues to live on within you. leave an offering there such as fresh flowers or dried herbs.

hold a seance or practice divination methods (tarot, pendulum, spirit boards, etc.):

since samhain is a time of little distance between the living and the dead, If there’s anyone on the other side you’d like to communicate with, now is the perfect time.

do shadow work!!:

not only is samhain a time to focus on death; it is also a time to focus on introspection from the past year’s events. take a look at your life and see what you’d like to release and then work through what you need to work through.
