The Ego(in eastern and/or buddhist philosophy), Nafs(in islamic philosophy), Default Mode Network(evidence based hard-science).
All these are basically different names for the narrating voices inside our heads when we're not engaged in any activity.
This part is evolutionary by design and for survival alone. Therefore not the optimal state of consciousness and/or not meant to make you happy.
Recently linked to anxiety, depression and schizophrenia. This is where all the suffering resides.
Whether or not humans have 'free will' is a question up for debate. But we definitely possess the ability to fully control and/or completely dissolve our ego, as demonstrated by the greatest humans among us and supported by evidence based science. All done through meditation.
For the avarage joe, doe, meditation leads to reduced Default Mode Network activity and helps improve overall life quality in every aspect and helps with issues like anxiety and/or depression if you're facing them.
