There is a significant humanitarian crisis unfolding in our midst due to the #ChinaVirus pandemic. For 25 yrs i had not seen a single beggar coming house to house & today the numbers are increasing by the day. The numbers may look in single digits but from zero in 25 yrs to 5/6
is statistically a 500% increase. Those who worked in restaurants, even big hotels have lost jobs with no hopes to get them back. Lakhs of self employed who served & supported the society with odd jobs like laundry, serving tea, barbers, cleaners, road side chaats, manual labor
not to speak of even organised biz which ran on casual labour like cleaning of trains, bus stands, the list is endless if one has been keeping their eyes open everyday - they are all jobless, income less & many who had dignity in their life are struggling to decide what next.
Most of these would dip into their life savings, then borrow before they finally lose their dignity & do whatever they can. Have seen educated folks start selling vegetables, fruits, flowers. This is a human tragedy that is very slowly unfolding & even with #Aadhar majority of
these will not & cannot get any benefits becoz there is no social security net from the govt, no system to track & assist. Given their previous positions they even become ineligible for help. Millions of children who benefitted from the mid day meals now neither have access to
meals nor education. How many have access to laptops, tablets & internet to take up online studies?
I repeat a humanitarian crisis is slowly but surely unfolding & unless things suddenly get better this is likely to become more serious. The govt maybe funding biz to tide over the
situation but trickle down effect is unlikely. The @narendramodi @PMOIndia must look at DBT to a large number of such folks who are not in any database where the govt thinks it is helping. One taxi driver told me how in his own knowledge close to 20 of his colleagues have DIED
due to issues created by the stress, loans, etc & NO they did not commit suicide, they had sudden health issues that simply killed them with no will to live or the means to seek help. Fact is that many orgs have helped, govt has done work but IMHO the work done is insufficient.
The govt must quickly use 'crowd sourcing" of info & see how to extend help to those who are left out of the normal chain. More importantly every citizen must adapt the attitude of #EachOneHelpOne & if each of us help whoever we can around us in whatever little manner the crisis
will be managed becoz the govt alone cannot handle this. Above all ack there is a crisis unfolding at the bottom of the pyramid & THAT must be noticed, acted upon proactively rather than react AFTER it becomes a full blown crisis in the next 6 to 18 months. @nsitharamanoffc
