I know its pretty late, but I think communication is key so we can stop feeling like shit and be rational and emotional about it, but with respect. I know this situation has touched on very sensible topics, BUT, I think this has, in its core, little to do with the BLM movement.
This is how I see it: Michael was having some fun with the petition thing, which was in response to hate messages, which he has been getting a lot of lately (not only to his work, but to his person and his loved ones). All of a sudden, someone confronts him about not having done
enough to promote BLM.
The thing is, we KNOW he does plenty of activism, we know he did speak many times about BLM and supports the cause. In this context, and even if the person who commented this had the best intentions, it came out as a really uncalled for attack.
Honestly it doesn't suprise me he blocked her, being that tired of unfair criticism I would have blocked her too. And yes, I know the tweet was originally about BLM, which is an extremely important and sensitive issue, but in this context it reads in a different way.
That comment cannot have an untouchable status because it mentioned BLM, because it was also disrespectful, unsympathetic, and intolerant towards him. There was no posible answer to that comment that would have satisfied those who forget we are just humans and we will never do
enough. I know that a really sizable amount of the worlds problems have underlying racism, but this specific situation I don't believe is about that. I find extremelly unhealthy that our first instinct to conflict or misunderstanding is to cancel people.
Even if Michael had done something wrong, which I don't think he did, nobody deserves to be judged so harshly so soon, without getting a chance to defend themselves. I believe he is a man who wrungs himself dry giving everything he can to his art, his activism, his family and
even to his fans. I don't understand how everything escalated like this, I believe as a fandom we can be more empathetic and more critical, though this is just my opinion. I would be happy to hear what you can add to this to make my own opinion grow. Lots of love 💐
