One of my problems with defining transmisogyny as the intersection of misogyny and transphobia is that, even if we are to define it just as combinations of more “fundamental” oppressions in that way, it would at least be the synthesis of misogyny + transphobia + anti-effeminacy.
You can’t leave the anti-effeminacy aspect out. I would argue we should add anti-viragism to that list too
A great deal of gender analysis improves quickly once we include anti-effeminacy as one of the patterns to observe within normative gender systems.
Sometimes people understandably balk at this because they have been taught that effeminacy means “male femininity.” Again, understandable, but I argue it’s better defined as incompatibility with compulsory manhood.
I argue this because I think it’s more explanatory. And in this view, trans women are maximally incompatible with compulsory manhood. More so than feminine men; anti-effeminacy harms us more, and it intertwines with misogyny.
