Listening to Mellon Collie on the 25th Anniversary of it's release.
Piano intro followed by an alltime classic song, Tonight, Tonight which BTW had an unbelievable video modeled after a freaking George Melies silent film.
Did anyone else in the 90s attempt a double album?
OK, Biggie did.
The Fragile. I guess my point is that 3,000 double albums were released in the two decades before and only legends could pull it off.
So, the third track "Here is No Why" would have been the second best song on 99% of every other angst band's album in the mid-90s. It's merely an enjoyable bridge to Bullet With Butterfly Wings here.
Bullet is a contentious song to me. It's unbelievably produced, and just what MTV wanted at the time, but it also negatively affected their legacy. It's their most juvenile pop song/video. They were so much more than that.
There are 28 songs on Mellon Collie, and every artist at the time would have killed for even one of those riffs.
If "Love" had been a Crash Test Dummies song, it would have been on the radio for a whole year instead of a merely top ten Mellon Collie song.
Galapagos. People legitimately got married to this song.
Billy repeatedly says Muzzle is one of his favorite songs. It's him explaining why he's the Michael Jordan of Alternative. Narcissism on a beautiful level.
Thru the Eyes of Ruby. Untouchable.
Take Me Down. You can actually hear the argument w Billy.

James: It's a double album and you won't put ONE of my fucking songs on it?

Billy: We'll see
Love is Suicide would have made every member of Candlebox millionaires
33. Also untouchable.
Fun fact: Billy took voice lessons after this album, but it never sounded as natural. His voice was meant to crack.
