Let me tell you a little story: I desperately want to avoid the feeling of not doing enough to help after the election. Also, when I have a task to keep me busy, I'm happier. 1/10
It was a beautiful day, I was sitting in the sun on my front porch, and thought it was a great time to text voters. Poked around a few different sites and then just went to @votesaveamerica and the landing page said "Volunteer Right Now" which was speaking my language 2/10
Signed up to text voters with @WeOpenProgress with Text Troop. I started to send texts to voters and, as I often do, went to post about it on social media to encourage my friends to do the same. 3/10
However, I realized a generic "you should really volunteer" wasn't going to cut it. Instead, I did Snapchat & Insta stories that walked through the platform, how easy it was to categorize answers and then send a response, and most importantly, the multiple layers of support. 4/10
I kept on texting to encourage early voting in Florida, and then get a response from my friend @KyleenRachel who asks how to sign up. She then posts a similar Instagram story overview. Wouldn't you know it, but we both see a mutual friend pop up in the Slack channel! 5/10
And then Kyleen texts me and says she posted how to sign up to work with @WeOpenProgress in a small group she's part of on Facebook and now several additional women have signed up! Meanwhile, I'm crying in between text responses at the power of our democracy. 6/10
So just from my little circle, within a few hours, about 10 people signed up to text voters, which could result in tens of thousands of voters being contacted. I sent 3,200 just tonight from my couch! 7/10
If we want the election results to be different from 2016, we MUST work towards it. Screaming into the void (or onto social media) does little to move people towards action. 8/10
I guess my point is that you should 1) Never doubt the power of your personal connections 2) BE SPECIFIC about how people can get involved. Share the link, website, organization. Talk about your experience. Break down concerns or anxiety. 9/10
People don't want to look stupid or ill-prepared or put on the spot, so use your voice to quell those concerns. We've only got 10 days left. Make it count! @WeOpenProgress wants to contact 1.5 million voters tomorrow, are you up for it??? 10/10
