NM Covid update: Do Not Fear the Dark Winter Edition.
When I quit doing the charts on Sep 1 it looked like we were almost done with this crap. But it wasn't done with us. Virus is gonna virus. As we know, positive tests are up, way up. 1/11

This isn't because of more testing, either. % positive rate has doubled from around 3% to over 6% this month. Hospitalizations are also spiking to May levels.
Maybe its out-of-state folks but AZ and TX have drastically reduced numbers so I don't see many coming here. 2/11

But its not the same deadly virus as it was in May. Treatment has greatly improved and even though positive tests are up the death rate is much lower.
First, here is the daily death count. Yes, it has increased a little this month but nothing like mid April to mid May. 3/11

Here's two charts for comparison.
First is the average daily positive test count by month.
Second is the average daily death count by month.
See the stark difference? 4/11

The rate of increase in cases is dwarfing the increase in deaths at this point.
To me this raises several questions.
Who are all these people testing positive? (I don't call them cases cause that implies they are sick and most are not.) 5/11

Also, who are all these people getting tested by the thousands each day? Do you just get up one morning and say "Hey, I'm gonna go get a swab stuck way up my nose today"? All these people can't be doing it cause they're feeling a little Covidy that day. 6/11
Obviously, thousands of people are lining up to get tested every day with no symptoms. I don't know why. And more of them are testing positive. This seems to me to be very good news. For whatever reason, the virus is rapidly spreading without causing massive illness. 7/11
The mortality rate per infection worldwide is dropping. For all age groups including seniors. Somehow this doesn't get reported. Better treatments help but it's also clear that the virus is weakening as it gets transmitted. Viral loads getting passed are lower than before. 8/11
Its known that most of us have some level of immunity to Covid because its so close to a cold virus, and the lower viral loads are more easily handled. Unhealthy folks are still at risk, but just being older doesn't seem to be as risky as before. Pres Trump for example. 9/11
I'm not a scientist but I know we're seeing this spike now instead of earlier because Guv Stumpy kept us locked down. AZ,FL,TX saw this same less deadly spike two months ago when they started opening. And now they're well past it and their economies are taking off. 10/11
Trying to keep it from spreading the way Stumpy has just prolongs the agony. The government cannot stop a virus. Its like nailing Jello to a board. We could lock down for another year and it won't make a difference. Just more pain. 11/11
