since the whole hellhole is now over, I'll now wrap up my thoughts in this thread.
first of all, mr beast is the forerunner of a brand of online "philanthropy" which involves him giving away money to people at random. This results in people who need money the most not always getting it.
There are discussions about how his philanthropy is just a way to expand his worth and gain followers, and how charity is just a tiny bandaid to heal a severed arm.
The present scenario, which involved someone getting the most number of interactions in their tweet clearly disadvantaged the ones without a large following: a game rigged from the start. This meant the people who need the money would not get it in the first place.
Next: the two forerunners were a bts fanbase trying to get the money so buy albums, and a youtuber wanting the money for charity. Before subsequent arguments, we need to remember that they both are able to raise the original sum on their own, but still they participated.
Well, they still participated; and all hell broke loose. There were racism, transphobia, ableism, homophobia, all thrown around to defame the opposition. These showed how some people lack a backbone to put up meaningless defenses.
BTS fans were accused of using someone's will deserved money to boost sales, but the game was rigged in the first place! No way someone who needed the money could win the game!
Ultimately Corpse won and the money will now go to a charity of his choice. Clearly the nobler option of the two. But is it still as noble when we think about the rigged nature of the game and how charity is insufficient to deal with systemic injustices?
Wasn't this whole exercise a ploy to make the participants seem like they're noble for giving away money to the less for the less fortunate? Wasn't this all just someone's elaborate ruse to make himself richer?
This was all a nasty mess, and it does not make ANYONE look good. There might be apparent choices, but nuances show that it's more of a grey area.
Also: getting poorer fans albums of their favourite artists IS INDEED charity in a sense of the word. Yes, having an album is a far less fundamental need than food, if it can be a need at all; but it can make someone feel better and who are we to rob someone of that feeling?
