Like 95% of my teachers growing up told me something like “you’re just not applying yourself” as if that’s how motivation or learning works.
Decades later I’m still working through the implicit shame of assuming I’m “bad” at tasks.

But you know what I’ve learned in the last 5 years? I can focus on things that interest me. I can work better when I’m standing up or moving around. I can think better when there’s music going (as long as there’s no words).
Last Sunday I played with a balloon with my son while streaming church and it was the most I’ve heard & processed from a sermon in literally months.
I’m just saying that if we spent more time helping people figure out ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛 instead of smushing them into the way we think 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛 we might end up with adults who learn well, have less shame, & less things I forgot from school.
Just as a stinger: in middle school I got countless detentions for tapping during class. In 5th grade, Ms. Benton gave me a pillow to tap on during math. Guess whose name I remember as opposed to 3 years of teachers I don’t?
