This is a thread about Me, Film Directing, and this Election.
But really, it& #39;s a thread about leadership.

But really, it& #39;s a thread about leadership.

I& #39;ve worked in film for 20 yrs, with directors good and bad.
Six years ago, I got the opportunity to direct my first film.
It turned out to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.
And it taught me what real leadership is.

Real leadership is the difference between success and failure, unity and division, progress and chaos.
It’s an act of service, to an idea bigger than yourself.
And to the team you lead.
So let me explain what makes a Good Director
And what makes a Shit Director

So let me explain what makes a Good Director
And what makes a Shit Director
3/15
A Good Director: works harder work than anyone else on the film. Anticipates problems. Solves them. Delegates with clarity and vision.
A Shit Director: thinks his job is letting others do all the work. Never thinks deeply, so his delegation is arbitrary and aimless.

A Good Director: seeks feedback and criticism, reflects on it deeply, but maintains a vision. Has the strength to test his/her ideas and make them better.
A Bad Dir: avoids feedback, becomes emotional and defensive in the face of criticism. Substitutes bluster for vision.

A Good Director: brings out the best in his crew. Inspires their work, pushes them to excel, unifies ~300 talented individuals towards a common goal.
A Shit Director: given that exact same crew, will leave them confused, demoralized and filled with division and angst.

A Good Director: Is kind. This doesn’t mean nice, or chill, or polite all the time. It means kind. Humane. They hold their crew to the highest standards, but never resort to cruelty or insults.
The stress of leadership is his/her responsibility to manage with grace.

A Shit Director: abuses their authority, belittles and insults others. Seeks to maintain control through intimidation and fear.
Responds to stress with anger and recrimination.

A Good Director: believes in strength, craft, empathy and accountability.
A Shit Director: believes in ego, authority, fame, blind loyalty.

A Good Director: always - ALWAYS - takes responsibility for their work.
A Shit Director: Will have excuses and empty promises until the last dollar has been burned to ash.

So I tried my best to be the Good Director.
It was exhausting, a relentless daily test of my intelligence and humanity.
But I did it.
I lived those values.
And I saw them work.
Every day for six straight years.

And meanwhile, I watched as the man elected to lead my country failed every test of leadership he faced.
Every. Single. One.

So it& #39;s personal to me, the failures of Donald Trump.
I see in him a reflection of my own weakness, laziness, arrogance, and fear.
But I overcame mine.
And I learned to lead.
He never will.
He is too weak.

Yeah, I was just making a movie.
But it reflects a bigger truth.
That a huge group of people can come together,
work like crazy, with dedication and kindness,
fighting for the best version of a collective dream.
And together, they can make something great.

That& #39;s America.
That& #39;s what real leadership should be.
It& #39;s hard.
It& #39;s fucking important.
