biggest stat for me in evaluating VT's offense is the discrepancy in success rate between standard downs and passing downs. IYDK: passing downs are 2nd and 8+, 3rd and 5+, 4th and 5+. basically any down where offense is in an obvious passing situation. everything else = Std. down
coming into today, our success rate on "standard downs" was 5th best in the country. (e.g. we gain a certain amount of yardage on those plays)

our success rate on passing downs is 67th.

that 31% drop is 2nd biggest in FBS -- ahead of only Air Force, a triple option team that...
has played 1 game and only had 14 pass down plays.

basically if you get us in an obvious pass situation we are going to fold. and that's what happened tonight. we couldn't run the ball, got forced to throw and failed miserably.
why is this? probably a combo of inaccurate QBs, poor pass pro from OL, lack of WR separation and/or simple passing schemes. either way, WF really exposed the flaws in this O. not sure how much I see it improving over the course of the year. hope we face more crappy DLs i guess
