I know that we’re all validating being Not Okay in the midst of *gestures around*.

But I’m really worried about how long being Not Okay is sustainable. This is damaging us, and folks are starting to break and it scares me. Especially for my already traumatized folks.
I lived through a ridiculously traumatic childhood and adolescence, and several long stretches of my adult life being Really Fucked Up.

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that long period of Survival Mode have a serious, long term cost.
The collective trauma of COVID is going to have ripples that make 9/11 and its aftermath look like a casual picnic.

Most of us do not have the resilience factors to survive this much fear and isolation and disruption unharmed.
What I’m getting at is that we need to start looking at what more we can do besides individual or collective social validation of our Not Okay.

Especially because capitalism is marching on, and corporations aren’t inclined to give a shit about our damage. Trust me, I know.
I work in healthcare for a large hospital that got hit hard with the first COVID wave. People in my workplace, across all functional areas, are worn the fuck out. We’ve taken an immense psychological/emotional beating.

The hospital leadership is giving only lip service help.
We get flowery emails telling us that matter, moments of silence, seminars on “psychological first aid”, and a jet flyover.

We also get frequent “reminders” about our productivity and our upcoming performance reviews.

What we don’t get is rest. And we are BURNED OUT.
I have taken exactly 4 hours of PTO since March 1st. It feels pointless to take time off if I can’t anywhere.

And I’m terrified that I’m going to get COVID and need to use all my PTO to recover (because I don’t have sick time...it’s all rolled together.)

I’m FRIED.
My hospital has gone so far as to ask us to DONATE our PTO to folks who exhausted theirs recovering from COVID

Capitalism will happily work us all to death. Companies don’t care if we are okay— they care if we produce. Capitalism isn’t going to make accommodations for our trauma
