Much before 2014, 2012 to be exact, I overheard a drunk conversation between two men at a diwali pandal at the building I lived in in Andheri West, Mumbai. They were both discussing how relieved they are since the only Muslim family in the building moved out that year.
Much before 2014, when I was learning to take buses and trains in Mumbai, concerned relatives would imply that I should avoid “those areas” with a wiggle of their eyebrows. “Those areas” where Muslims were forced to live because so many residential complexes wouldn’t rent to them
“Those areas” where civic facilities are hugely lacking. “Those areas” where roads have deep potholes, garbage is not picked up, and street lights rarely work.
“Those areas” where we tell women and children to be careful because they have “those people.”
