Is it time to revisit the 1:1 nursing ratio on ITU? Rather than one nurse doing EVERYTHING (ventilation, drugs, vasopressors, filters, safety checks, drugs), why not have a team of ITU nurses doing rounds, responsible for each part, and a HCSW by the bed keeping a constant eye?
I just wonder whether, with such a deficit of ITU nurses across the UK, whether the model we have is efficient or even safe. One bedside nurse isnât enough for everything that needs to be done. Itâs a busy, busy job and could it be better by dividing the jobs across the unit?
