I get what people are saying when they say retail work is real work because retail workers do deserve a living wage etc but.. these jobs shouldn’t exist. Retail as it is under capitalism needs to be abolished
The majority of workers in low paid, menial jobs are coerced into taking them. Why would I want to fold the same pairs of jeans for 8 hours straight for £8 an hour when there are starving children that could be fed by a community garden I help build? This shouldn’t be normalised
There are 100s of shops in London selling the same, overpriced shirts made by the same superexploited garment workers in the global south being sold to you by people who get punished for leaving the shop floor to piss or drink water and are subject to a search when they clock out
I’ll never see the fruits of my labour cos it’s going straight into some CEOs pocket to pay for his 5th holiday home and in exchange I get a measly 25% off to prevent me from revolting against this greedy corporation, fuck these jobs. We don’t want them
I don’t think retail work is “valid”. It exists to reinforce the gender binary as well as race and class divisions as well as giving consumers the illusion that they can access certain things by the material goods they can by.
Having to work unsociable hours, not earning enough money to live on, creating absolutely nothing meaningful and being alienated from my co workers has crushed me over the years. Retail jobs are incredibly suppressive and no one should have to do this shit.
