Oh Bloody Hell !
So here I was having a conversation with two of my friends which suddenly escalated into a discussion on periods and related taboos. They were really disgusted/astonished to hear some of the things girls have to go through at the time

Convo shared here: https://twitter.com/thehermitcoffee/status/1320050662646837248?s=20
This thread is dedicated to all the myths and taboos related to MENSTRUATION that I’ve heard growing up.

1.A menstruating woman is impure.
2. A menstruating woman is impure.
3. You can’t enter a kitchen or cook food for anyone else.
4. You can’t enter a place of worship.
5. You have to wake up before sunrise and bath.
6. Don’t touch the pickles, it would go bad.
7. Periods are shameful,it should be kept secret.Pads need to be kept unseen
8. Period blood has a bad smell
9.The pain of a period is ‘just like’ anything you’ve experienced.
10.Only women have a menstrual cycle.
Girls and women menstruating is not unclean. (Get that into you thick skull). It’s normal, natural, and healthy. Period blood would have nurtured a baby when women get pregnant. It’s like the blood that runs in your veins but has fewer blood cells.
How can anything that has the potential to bring a new life be dirty? Not to mention there is no scientific proof that backing most of these claims.
We are taught to keep our periods a secret and never to talk about it .In fact, it is just the opposite. When a girl menstruates for the first time, she is totally clueless about the sudden changes and would benefit by talking about it and knowing more about this natural process.
This discussion should be extended to the boys because only then they’ll understand what exactly happening

Otherwise the boys would end up like my friend who thought, sanitary napkins are diapers for girls, because we tend to pee walking at a certain age😏അവൻ ഇപ്പൊ എവിടെയാണാവോ ?
Menstrual blood itself has no odour. It’s made of blood and tissue that sheds from your uterus, and when mixed with the naturally occurring bacteria in your body, it may smell a little less than fresh, but this doesn’t mean we smell bad at the time or that we are repulsive.
The pain we get during a period is real. We’re not talking about headaches or migraines.Imagine curling up in bed, vomiting and only living on crackers and black tea for nearly 2 days, hoping the that the pain would subside.
If boys you can imagine that intense pain of getting kicked in your balls ,multiply it with 10 and imagine having that for 2 days straight

This condition is called dysmenorrhea.
Studies show around 20 percent of women have dysmenorrhea that’s severe enough to interfere with their daily activities. This condition affects our ability to concentrate, makes us more anxious, and can make us downright unpleasant. It’s not pleasant 😞
Not every woman gets her period and not every female who gets a period considers themselves a woman. Transgender men may still get their periods, just as transgender women might not have periods.Menstruation isn’t always just a “woman’s” issue. It’s a human issue.
The point is the stigma around periods still exist in this 21st century and that is a humanitarian crisis. We need to stop thinking that periods are gross, shameful, and dirty.
When women are treated differently because of a naturally occurring body cycle it creates shame, taboos, and humiliation towards periods that is deeply embedded into society.
We shouldn’t have to feel like we need to whisper about needing a pad or hide it up our sleeve. Periods aren’t anything out of the ordinary, and neither is talking about them.

So everyone, Let's normalize talking about periods❣️
P.S. Everyone please feel free to share all the stupid things about periods you’ve heard growing up.
P.P.S If you still think Periods are something that should be brushed under the carpet ,the only thing that’s ridiculous here is your mentality.
