Guardiolas philosophy is that you have 5 players available in both attacking transitions and defensive transitions at all times and that you never have more than 2 players occupying the same vertical are of the pitch. On the left shows this philosophy and on the right our setup
A lot of the time in the last two seasons we’ve set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with narrow wingers, wider fullbacks and deeper midfielders.
This goes completely against peps philosophy of bringing the fullbacks inside to create better transitions between defence and attack and also to have better passing, control of the ball. This is also to allow the wingers to have more 1v1 opportunities against the fullbacks.
Pep inverted the fullbacks to ensure there was always one player spare, this allowed for better passes in triangular shapes and also to stop teams counter attacking. Also creating 1v1 scenarios out wide for the wingers to attack the byline and create opportunities in the box.
So why has Guardiola went and changed all the ideas that made his teams in the past so dominant?
In the same video I sued earlier tbf pep does mention that it isn’t about the tactics you use but the players you have to work with. And maybe that is the problem, losing sane delph silva Fernandinho from the team has made him have to change so much. But still confusing
