On the Saturday ten days before the 2016 election, my wife and I arrived in Washington, D.C. for a 9-day stay.

The world was very different than it is, a mere four years later. I'm going to share some photos that I took each day, four years ago.

The first: the Capitol building.
The Capitol reflecting pool and the monument to Ulysses S. Grant. I was struck by the number of people of all different races that were enjoying the end of day in front of the Capitol.

There were no signs, no one protesting, no anger on display.
A view down the National Mall at twilight towards the Washington Monument.
And finally, later that night, a photo of what I thought would be ironic: the Trump International Hotel, owned by that soon-to-be failed presidential candidate, Donald J. Trump. Little did I know four years ago.

Today we are eight days away from the 2020 election. These are photos taken eight days before the 2016 election. First, the Capitol Building.
The Rotunda in the Capitol Building.
"The Signing of the Declaration of Independence" by John Trumbull, one of four paintings commissioned in 1817 and placed in the Rotunda between 1819 and 1824.
The tunnel, as I recall, between the Capitol Building and the Library of Congress.
The main reading room in the Library of Congress.
The Capitol Building at twilight.
Tomorrow: photos taken seven days before the 2016 election in Washington, D.C.
Continuing this thread featuring photos that I took before the 2016 election while in Washington, D.C. We are now seven days away from the 2020 election. These are the photos I took of Washington, D.C. seven days before the 2016 election.
I took only two. First, this street corner. It might've been the old building on the corner that interested me.
Old buildings that are under construction or renovation fascinate me. I like to hope that they're being renovated and will be returned to their former glory.

This building might've been on 7th St. walking South from the Shaw-Howard University Metro station.
Tomorrow, photos taken six days away from the 2016 election in Washington, D.C.
Continuing this thread of photos from Washington, D.C. just before the 2016 election. Today we're six days from the 2020 election. Photos six days from the 2016 election follow.

I've been trying to show, via these photos, how at peace America was with itself in 2016. There ...
... were no protests outside the White House, no one going into Karen or Ken tirades against their fellow citizens, no one carrying firearms openly, no one being rude to one another on the street. Four years ago, there was a festive, happy atmosphere in D.C. We thought that ...
