i have two degrees in literature & probably have enough credits in feminist classes in both of those degrees to count for a minor in women’s studies, & lgbt studies while i’m at it. plus i am a bisexual feminist and do a lot of studying on my own!here’s what annoys me most:
1. when women or lgbt people are not educated about their own history
2. when the critique isn’t focused on my writing but on my knowledge of these topics, by people who are not as knowledgeable on these topics
3. “im not a feminist, but...”
4. obviously should go without saying but exclusionary feminism is a no. intersectional all the way. love your trans brothers and sisters, your enby siblings, love your Black and Latinx and Asian siblings. your feminism is not feminism IMO if it’s not intersectional
“did women in {time period} actually know they were oppressed?” maybe not in modern words but women aren’t idiots and have always known where we stood. would we say, “Did slaves actually KNOW they were slaves?”
when you start sentences with “Im not a feminst, but...” you’re telling me a LOT about yourself in those words. i don’t even care what the “but” is.
There is a very skewed perception that feminists are asking for “too much,” “more” than equality, “more” than deserved. YOU CAN ONLY VOTE AS A WOMAN BECAUSE OF FEMINSM! of course because of white women who excluded Black women and women of color. so we have to talk about that too
Feminists and LGBT activists (with a huge overlap though feminists tried to excluded LGBT folks) worked tirelessly together to get us all the rights we have today.!!
I will continue to add to this thread maybe with some book recs. Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman is GREAT!!!!!! it’s a history of lesbianism in the 20th century.
