dissecting the #ENHYPEN_DebutTrailer2 (read: things i noticed while watching) - a VERY LONG thread
[i did NOT know i would write this much, skip to the end if you want for a tl;dr]
first couple of seconds we spend zooming into a really wide shot of the forest, & even though there's a lotta sunlight filtering through the tree cover, the dark color palette of the shot & the way it's all focused on a seemingly dead figure and the part of the forest that's-
cluttered makes it all feel very claustrophobic. the music is also accordingly ominous, and that's when we see that the figure in the first shot was sunoo, still alive, but obviously scared and curling himself into a fetal position. he's lying on a mirror, & there is definitely-
some sort of a self-refelctive imagery going on there that we, the viewers, don't yet understand. we then see jay inside what looks like a safehouse or somehwere he squatted for safety, and perspective-wise, the camera angle is very narrative in that it portrays how alone jake-
is in that grimy room. we also see a shot of jay sleeping, which denotes that he feels safe enough to sleep in his safehouse ... or maybe he was just exhausted enough that he passed out.
then comes a really cool rotating pan-in of sunoo. he's sitting on an armchair now, and looks void of any emotions when the camera closes in on him. the music suddenly begins to fasten, feeling more urgent than before.
then, we see what feels like the reason why the music had become more tense- ni-ki. at first, he's just laying ont he ground like sunoo was, but then he starts to move in scattered movements, almost inhumanly, and the music becomes slightly more tense. (the palette gets darker 2)
immediately after, there's a beat that 'hits', and as if he is the answer to the tense music until now, we see jake. he's in a car, awashed in ominous red light, and seems- until now- to be the only member we've seen who doesn't look emotionally scarred or terrifed.
instead, jake seems almost like he's bored, maybe like he's waiting for someone, as he leisurely has his hand up and looks to the side. something itneresting to note here? there's moss & leaves over his car. like he's been here for a lot longer than humanly acceptable.
we then see sunghoon, who's also lying on the forest floor like the 2 before, but for him, it almost seems like he'd prepared for it- he has a red fabric (maybe a change of clothes?) underneath him. he seems serene. the first part of the music abruptly crescendoes and stops here.
now, the music becomes slightly faster & we see jungwon presumably trying to navigate his way out of the forest. he looks scared.
the shots start to go back & forth much faster, and we see heeseung lying against a mirror. the same mirror that sunoo was lying against before he moved to the armchair, and hee's reflection is visible against it.
we also quickly see sunoo, now seeming more aware of his surroundings, in the armchair and looking really scared as he bunches himself inward again in fear. the music is even more ominous-sounding.
then, we see him again- jake. still in the blood-red light in the car, but much closer this time. notcie that his skin seems airbrushed to perfection. none one of the other boys seemed this perfect, this ... inhuman. he still seems like he's leisurely waiting for something.
now, a BUNCH of shots flash across the screen, and they seem to have a bit of a theme going on- it's one of the boys looking terrified, and the the other displaying some sort of a supernatural power/attribute. we have ni-ki with his scattered movements that are almost demonic &
seem like he's 'turning' or 'transforming' in some way, and a shot of sunoo looking scared. this contrasting visual is followed by the similarly contrasting one of sunghoon with his fangs out & seeming very self-assured, almsot happy, while jake still looks exhausted in his room.
following THAT is another shot of ni-ki's isolated/transforming movements followed by one of heeseung looking at the mirror he's laying against. he's looking at his reflection almost like it'll disappear any second & he doesn't want it to.
sunghoon stops mid-walk, as if he found what he was looking for, & two consequent shots of jungwon & sunghoon make it seem like they're looking at each other. like they've finally come face-to-face & whatever cat and mouse game they were playing has ended. sunghoon still has-
that red cloth in his hand. then, we see these two shots amongst others: so it is confirmed that jake & sunghoon are vampires, & that sunghoon lured jungwon & brought him to jake so that he could either feed off him or turn him or both.
jungwon's face is then momentarily shown in the light, before it flickers & his face is dark again. we see a shot of jay looking worried (presumably for jungwon), & then when we see jungwon's face again, it's not scared ot worried or anything. he looks resolute.
there are lot's of more flashy shots as the music settles down again, & among them is jake with his own blood dripping down his mouth. since the deed has been done (jungwon has been turned), things seem to calm a little again.
jay, still in his room, gets up from his mattress & looks out the window. sunoo still looks scared. jay's face now looks resolute- as if he has a goal now. when we cut back to sunoo, he disappears in a poof. so we now know that he, too, has been turned.
there's a telling cinematic parallel between heeseung, still confused & unsure & previously scared, lying against the mirror, & jake, so sure of himself & his mvoements and so in control, lying similarly against the car.
we then see a series of shots showcasing different things, but all portraying the same notion: acceptance of one's newfound abilities and power. sunghoon takes off the red cloth he had wrapped himself in, & the action feels immesnely freeing. no inhibitions now.
sunoo seems like he has taken to hiding in trees like a bat does, upside down. perhaps it shows a slow acceptance of his powers since he's using them, but only to hide from the world.
finally, we see the ending sequence of this particular 'series' of shots- heeseung looks down carefully at the mirror he's been laying against this whole time, and allows himself to actually LOOK. sure enough, he doesn't have a reflection anymore. the verdict is out. not human.
the screen fades to black & the music stops. like i said, the previous shot was a resolution, and ending. now, the color palette has compeltely shifted from dark greens to cold hues of blue. jungwon walks resolutely towards the rest of them, like a decision has been made,
& they all stand in solidarity, together, looking at the horizon until the sun is high int he sky & mist starts to appear all around them. the color palette changes one last time from the blues to an over-saturated pink & orange. it seems like they burned with the sunrise, but-
they burned knowingly, after coming to a unanimous decision, and they burned together. in solidarity.
