IMHO, Kanchi mutt is not a *recent* phenomenon as claimed but has gained *prominence* in 20th Century due to the sheer austerity and spirituality of HH Kanchi Paramacharyal. ++ the prevailing environment then against Hindu Sanatana Dharmam. We have seen history of capitals of kingdoms, idols/dieties of a temple being shifted for longer/shorter periods until the environment is stable. There are versions of Adi Shankaracharya ++

++ ascending the sarvagya peetam at Srinagaram/Kashmir as well as merging into Kamakshi Devi at Kanchi. These cannot be debated as we have lost the history due to external forces or the internal forces not able to preserve the history through Smrti/Smriti if not through texts. ++

++ Each and every Shankaracharya is blessed to be a Parameshwara HIMSELF and HH Kanchi Paramacharyal is believed to be sAkshAt Parameshwara Swaroopam. And this in itself can be taken as a *sign* for the revival, preservation and practice of Hindu Sanatana Dharmam in the ++

++ 20th Century when there has been a blip and downside of Hindu Dharma due to the external forces in the past 1000 years of invasions by the Turks, Sultanates, Mughals and then the Portuguese, French, Denmark, Norway and Britishers. Kanchi has been one of the prominent ++

++ but it is upto one's faith and belief to discern. Even if one disagrees, it is very well understood in front of our eyes and ears that HH Kanchi Paramacharyal has established the authority and prominence of Kanchi mutt in the 20th Century. ++

++ And to end, we have also seen the external forces behind targeting and tarnishing the Kanchi mutt for political reasons as well as to attack the very tenets of Hindu Sanatana Dharmam in the Dravidian land. We never know what it would be like in the next 1000 years.
