For those of you who don’t want to click in, here’s some legal scholarship on using the n-word in the classroom. One of those professors was called out by Black students this year for using the “epithet” repeatedly when there was no pedagogical value. He continued to use it.
And the thing is - the pedagogical value doesn’t really exist. By the time most people are in law school — let alone high school, they know the word. They know what it means. And for most Black people, using the word in an academic setting is far more prejudicial than probative.
It’s infuriating to see people try to turn their own highly problematic conduct into an academic thinkpiece. It skews the question from whether they should be using the n word in the classroom to whether they can. Just because you can doesn’t mean you ever should or need to.
