Did @nationaltrust stray from its “clear, simple purpose”?

This is my take (from reading it's charitable objects on the Charity Commission website)...
The National Trust does what it does "FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE NATION"

That doesn't mean for some individuals of the nation, it means doing what is morally and ethically right for the nation as a whole. Raising awareness of the difficult history of our nation is for its benefit.
"PRESERVATION OF FURNITURE, PICTURES AND CHATTELS OF ANY DESCRIPTION"

To preserve something is not only to maintain its physical form, it is to understand its history, context and meaning. Raising awareness of the difficult history of objects is essential in preserving them.
"HAVING NATIONAL AND HISTORIC OR ARTISTIC INTEREST."

The buildings, furniture and other objects are of interest to all histories, not just the dominant telling of a single history. Raising awareness of the difficult history some people don't want to hear is of national interest.
The National Trust have been protecting and caring for places so people and nature can thrive for 125 years. They'll be doing it for the next 125 years.
