Ricky Staub directs this film based on his novel "Ghetto Cowboy" which is a snapshot of American history erased by years of whitewashing gentrification.
In front of a nonfiction narrative about Black cowboys in Philadelphia is Cole, (Caleb McLaughlin) a Detroit teen whose latest trip to the principal's office has him shipped to spend the summer with his estranged father, Harp (Idris Elba).
Harp runs the Fletcher Street stables, the last of a dwindling community of Philly cowboys. As the city suffocates them out of their neighborhood, Cole must decide whether he wants to remain caged or opt to run free.
The film is a familiar tale of mending relationships and manhood, but the real-life story underneath is what draws you in. McLaughlin is strong in his first big role outside of the Stranger Things realm.
He and Elba are supported by Lorraine Toussaint and the always wonderful Jharrel Jerome.
