a thread on ways to help you get better at using they/them pronouns for people :)
i'd like to start by saying i'm cis (currently questioning my gender) but these are just tips that have helped me a lot :)
and i will not be explaining what they/them pronouns are or how to use them bc there's plenty of info on that. this thread is to help you break away from defaulting to he/him or she/her :)
1) practice. a lot. practice out loud, practice in your head, practice with mutual friends. just practice a lot it goes a long way.
2) correct yourself. if you slip up around people, simply correct yourself, say sorry and move on. do nOT over apologize. just move on quickly after correcting yourself. and do this in your head too!! correct yourself if you use the wrong pronouns while thinking about them.
3) stop viewing them as their agab. (if they are nonbinary/trans) you cant get better at using their correct pronouns if you still see them as their agab. it's contradicting. you HAVE to work on viewing them as their actual gender (even if you don't understand it)
4) write it down. write little stories about them, things you like about them, or anything using their correct pronouns. for me this helps a LOT.
5) find more media that uses they/them pronouns. if you've never been exposed to they/them pronouns then it's hard to pick up. so read stories, watch movies/shows, follow people on social media who use they/them pronouns. it helps a lot.
