If you stop flying or fly less because of climate change and you talk about it with others, you are doing far more than cutting your own emissions. For some people, you are also doing this...

-providing information about the seriousness and urgency of climate change... 1/
-normalising a decision not to fly
-providing rational and emotional reassurance that reducing or ceasing flying is justified, sensible, socially acceptable and sustainable
-providing a radical, impressive, committed, inspirational example
2/
-confirming existing views/knowledge on climate change
-providing moral guidance
-demonstrating an alignment of beliefs, values and behaviour.
-providing the seed of new ideas
-crystalising values and desires
3/
-providing concrete examples of alternatives to flying, eg taking the train, taking longer, or not travelling.
-providing comfort/relief from internal stress about a perceived lack of agency.
-demonstrating that a successful life is not dependent on flying

4/
... that's according to interviewees and survey respondents who have been influenced by someone who has stopped flying because of climate change. 🙂
