the topic of writing commissions annoys me so much bc you can't discuss that without people having to bring up fanart commissions lol like you di realise they're two different art forms and you can't pay them the same way & obtain the same thing out of it right
idk man I'm just tired that every time we gotta be reminded of how low people think of writing (& fanwriting bc that's one step lower "actual writing") & how much "better" fanart is for no actual reason other than art being immediate even if the two art can't even compare
I love fanart so much & even as someone who cannot draw I can imagine just how much time and experience you need to create awesome fanarts. but when the topic is written fiction, people think that everyone can do it bc they really don't value it as much as they value visual art
& I mean, this is the usual double edges sword. yes, writing is a good art bc anyone can try and have fun with it, but also no, just "writing it out" doesn't mean you're writing good fiction. & I realise that with visual art it's easier to make this distinction (bc you can
clearly see when colors don't fit, when the anatomy isn't exactly good, when the lines are wobbly not bc of the artist's style but bc of lack of experience, etc.) but like the same happens with written fiction? it's just that people don't pay attention to it?
you don't have to be a genius to see that the dialogues are unrealistic, that the story lacks meaning, that the writer's style doesn't fit the atmosphere & can't make you feel the emotions you're supposed to be feeling... they're visceral things you can discern just by reading
but I guess that visual art is everywhere so you get used to it faster while written fiction is not everywhere so you have to "train" yourself to read. but still, it annoys me bc people don't even try
you know, I said that I can understand why drawing is hard even if I can't draw to save my life. & you know what? I know that drawing needs experience and training EXACTLY bc I can't draw. I can't draw a straight line, I can't pick colors, I don't know shit about composition
but then you get people who start writing just bc (which is cool!) & they can "nail it" bc you don't need to exercise to write a sentence with subject + verb + complements bc that's what you get taught in school. and suddenly look at how easy writing is! everyone can do it!
and YEAH also everyone can probably run, but I don't see all of us participating in the running olympic games or whatever.

like. being able to write doesn't mean being able to write good fiction, & writing good fiction is not as simple as putting the words on a paper
