JJW was like a god in my father's house, and we prayed to him often. One of his favorite tunes was "David & Me". This one always gets me:
So much treasure spread across so many (out of print and/or hard to find) albums. Half the stuff you can find online is a fanmade copies from tapes and vinyl. But the glory of the originals still comes through.
This 1972 masterpiece last had an official release in 1980 (the only CD you can find is an Australian boot).
He could definitely represent the party-hard end of Outlaw Country. But the dude could also tear your heart out like few others.
¡Viva Terlingua! (1973) is a good place to start, but there is also a trove of live stuff out there.
Whatever it was, I'm hoping he's found a lot of it up there in heaven.
I guess I'll end where I started, and just wave farewell to a Gypsy Songman and a musical hero.
