/ Another day of confusion in Kyrgyzstan, as Central Electoral Commission (CEC) sets a presidential election for January 10, while their office is being *raided* by police. Official reasons for raid -- violations at Oct 4 elections. Unofficial: Japarov doesn't like the new date.
/ Why doesn't he like the date? He said recently he expects parliamentary + presidential elections before March. But before then he wants to change the constitution, presumably by referendum. What to change? For starters, a stipulation preventing acting presidents from running!
/ He has also suggested presidential governance is better for KG than a mixed system. Under the present system Kyrgyzstan's president is still the most powerful figure in the set up, but they had more control over finances and appointments before constitutional changes in 2010.
/ Another twist in the tale of Kyrgyzstan's latest crisis. People joking on social media "s detstva za TSIK" (I was for the CEC from the start!) as CEC now seen upholding a constitution Japarov is trampling on. But the same CEC oversaw the grubby Oct 4 vote that began the crisis
/ But if there is anything the last three weeks have told us it is that nothing is final in Kyrgyzstan. If Japarov dislikes the new presidential election date enough, he will try everything to change it, constitutional niceties be damned. (END OF THREAD)
