THREAD: This thread could have been on every single player after yesterdays performance but I've gone with the ever present Mateusz Klich. #LUFC
He started the game in his normal number 8 position but when Struijk got a booking and was shortly replaced by Shackleton, he moved into the defensive midfield position. His heat map just shows how much ground he covered in both positions.
He finished the game with the most successful passes, completing 52/61. He found space in front of Villa's midfield three but behind their striker Watkins. This allowed him to get on the ball and progress it forward.
Despite playing in a deeper role from the 21st minute, he still managed to complete 22 successful attacking third, the most of any player. The rotation and overload by Leeds attacking players allowed him to play his passes in a more advance position as Villa had to defend deep.
As always he played with intensity. He's not as aggressive and dominate in tackles as Phillips is when he's playing in a deeper role but he constantly applied pressure throughout. He got stuck in and gave away niggly fouls but was sensible when doing so.
Villa so far this season have been able to push Barkley close to Watkins but because of Leeds movement and attacking intent they played more of a 4-3-3 rather than a 4-2-3-1. This suited Leeds and Klich as he wasn't required to do much defensive work.
Klich came away with an assist, setting up Bamford second, who still had a lot of work to do. It was the build up to the pass that was impressive. He had a quick look before receiving the pass to know where the pressure was coming from.
When he did receive the ball from Dallas he knew where Barkley was and this allowed him to dribble past him with relative ease. He drove into the space that Barkley vacated in midfield.
Once Klich got closed down, he squeezed a smart pass through the legs of Luiz to find Bamford. Of course Bamford finish was excellent and he still had a lot of work to do but the pitch intelligence by Klich was impressive.
Since Bielsa has come into Leeds, Klich has been a vital cog in his machine. He showed last night that he's versatile and filled in for the injured Phillips with ease. Bielsa now has a good headache of whether to start Shackleton or stick with Struijk and play Klich at no.8.
End of thread. Retweet away please if you love Klich and Leeds United đź‘€ #LUFC
