I’m really disturbed by how many people commenting on Ben Bradshaw are just uncritically repeating the “crack den and brothel” bit, sometimes even saying that *clearly* the kids in question should have been taken into care.
These are “real” or meaningful terms: they’re designed to stereotype and other, and they shouldn’t be repeated as if they make sense!
Crack den: does that mean someone in the household uses drugs, uses hard drugs, sells drugs, or people come to the house to consume drugs? They pose really different risks to a child & the first definitely should not be cause for automatically removing a child from their family.
Brothel: this is a premises where more than one person uses for commercial sex. People don’t usually ~live~ in brothels: they work shifts there, or they arrange to meet people there.
Actual brothels/saunas are fairly formally organised: shift patterns, managers, maids: they are places of work, & they no more have people living in them than any other other place of work.
But brothel laws are also used to criminalise people who live together and sell sex. That’s not a “anyone can rock up any time for sex” situation, it’s a “people arrange appointments for times when they are available, probably not going to be when the kid’s at home” situation.
If you think a child should be removed from their family because someone in the household is doing sex work, that’s stigma.
WRONG BEN, I’ve now corrected 3/7 tweets, what else have I got wrong. https://twitter.com/crashed7/status/1319922556439285760
