I worked in a junior school office. I loved that job. A small side project was to get as many kids as possible onto free school meals. I printed out the forms and sent them home with the kids. It was mentioned in school newsletters.
Every parent that came into the office was given a form and advice on how to apply. Hardly anyone applied. I couldn't understand it. We knew the demographics of our kids and families. We should have had so many applications.
So I started chatting to the parents/ carers at pick up and drop off. On their own they would tell me they didn't apply because there was a stigma attached to FSM. I'd tell them about my mum being a single parent who worked so many jobs and struggled and how I was a FSM kid.
Slowly the numbers of kids on FSM went up. We'd celebrate every application. Kids were getting fed, parents were getting a tiny bit of monetary breathing space, the school was getting extra funding for every FSM kid, no losers.
The Tory council had breakfast clubs during SATs for the all the kids taking the exams, so the council knew the benefits a good meal had for kids. And the benefits kids who weren't hungry had on the education statistics.
Parents offered FSM weren't snatching the forms out of our hands thinking, "ya beauty. I'll be able to sell an unbranded bag of puffed rice for drugs! My ship has come in!" The huge majority of people aren't like that. Think of all the people you know. They're not.
Teachers and office staff know their kids. They know the parents and carers. It's not about judging the adults (safeguarding issues aside of course, they were dealt with) it's always, always, about helping the kids.
"But adults are taking advantage" Deal with the adults while still feeding the kids. "But some parents are bad and neglectful" Deal with the adults while still feeding the kids.
"They're junkies alkies pathetic" deal with the adults, feed the kids, and take a look at yourself. They're the kids and adults we need to help the most.
(Of course the vast majority of parents and carers on FSM are not the people that they are being painted to be. They're us, doing our best)
And that's too long for me on a Saturday. Rashford is brilliant, most people are doing their best and need help sometimes, and when we don't know what the right thing to do is, feeding the kids will always be the right thing to do. /end
