On Marcus Rashford vs the Tories: this is a lesson in the renewed dynamics of austerity. Whilst the government had to intervene in the economy to avert a total collapse, it is still deeply committed to rolling back welfare rights, including the right not to starve
What Rashford is doing is incredible. Nevertheless it’s the Big Society (remember that?) working exactly as Cameron and Osborne planned. Welfare is transfigured into charity and the burden of care is shifted from the state to private individuals and the market.
There may well be a u-turn but I reckon the government’s bloody-mindedness on free school meals is meant to signal to us that worse is yet to come, particularly in relation to the no-deal Brexit disruptions on the horizon.
