@mithuzha made me think of Tamil food so here’s a thread of Tamil vegetarian food, the only vegetarian food I can stomach. Some of these are also eaten throughout South India so it’s not only Tamil.
Vadai with chutney and tea. I’ll die for crispy ulunthu vadai, but there’s also Paruppu vadai, Sambar Vadai, Thayir Vadai. Amazing. Wonderful.
Thosai is probably what unites Tamils with other South Indian ethnicities because I think we all love it. Most versatile queen. Egg, masala, paper, tastes good paired with anything at all.
APPAM. Oh my favourite. It’s usually eaten with milk and red sugar. It’s amazing. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Very popular among Tamils and Malayalees.
Now I’m gonna skip to rice for a bit. Who else loves rice as much as us??? So many ways to eat Sorru. Puli Sorru, Thayiru Sorru, Pongal Sorru (can be sweet or eaten savoury as ven Pongal), Melagu Sorru. Amazing, beautiful, wonderful.
Sambar. It works with anything at all. Thosai, idli, sorru. Sambar is the king of Vege food. You can add any vegetable you want. Lentils are the base. Don’t want carrot, don’t add. Want murungakkai, ADD MORE. ALL GOOD.
Rasam. You can make it spicier as melagurasam or slightly more mild as thakkali rasam. It’s amazing. Just DROWN your rice with rasam and swallow it down. It’s very light and people also drink it after a meal. Wow.
THANNI SAARU. We need to talk more about Thanni Saaru. It’s usually made with Keerai (Vegetable) - usually Agathi keerai and murunge keerai.
Kootu is slightly thicker than sambar. You can add cabbage, Vazhathandu (banana tree stem), mixed vege.
Morru. Morru is life. It’s different from thayiru and it’s made with some spices. It can also be made with Vege as Morru curry but I’ll happily drink buckets of Morru on its own.
The way vegetable SIDES kick ass. Add spices to any vegetable and you have amazing sides for yella saapadu
PUTTU. They eat it all over South India but it’s very popular in Eelam. It can be sweet or savoury.
Idiyappam is often overlooked but it’s so good with red sugar or with Kurma. This is solid breakfast food.
PACHADI AND THUVAIYAL. To add flavour to an already amazingly flavourful food. Not to be confused with ooruga (pickle)

Another one I forgot!! Amazing. https://twitter.com/videominivan/status/1320062897792364545
I can’t sleep so here’s more: uthappam!! It’s kind of a crunchier thosai for those who haven’t had it. It usually has onion, tomato bits, coriander, chilli and more in the batter
Best dessert - PAYASAM. I always add vadai and appalam in if and it’s amazing. Undefeated dessert. So many variations too.
I don’t know how I forgot upma. It gets so much hate but it’s amazing. I love upma.
Adding more Eelam food!! Sambal is amazing!!! Anything with sambal will never be bad. https://twitter.com/videominivan/status/1320071390129782785
