me to myself: do not engage

me to twitter: but romeo & juliet is tragedy tho https://twitter.com/Delafina777/status/1319479003577659392
like... ooh dying for love when if you had taken two minutes you would've realized everything was fine... so sexy.

romantic plots does not a romance make.
does shakepeare really need anyone defending him? no
does my shakespeare nerd self know how to keep my thoughts to myself? no
if i read a romance novel or watch a romcom film and people dont end up ROMANTICALLY together imma be pissed.

did i love SOMEONE GREAT? 100%. did i consider it a romance? no. it was sad AF.

like...me loving happy ROMANTIC endings does not mean i dont understand self love
it's like when all of us are screaming about how we love bad boys in books and some of yall are like, they're terrible person therefore you're a terrible person to say a relationship like that is okay and... it's fiction my dude. it's my safe space. and i want HEA in my romance.
this all boils down to more people needing to actually consume "romance genre media" bc if you did this conversation wouldn't keep coming up every other day/week/month. everyone wants to say something about romance. most people need to not.
the difference being that fantasy does not REQUIRE you to have magic tho. romance is built on romantic relationships and tropes and ends in happily ever afters or happily for nows having a book in which a woman, for instance, ends up single is fine but thats another genre
thats like promising someone a sword and sorcery fantasy and then there are no adventures at all, everyone is just sitting around and chilling and talking about their feelings. thats fine and could be a great book, but you missed the mark of the label.
anyway, i started reading the #bridgerton series at y'alls suggestion and #thedukeandi was fantastic and now im on to the next book. ah, romance <3
yes people i know what the literal definitely of a tragedy back then was. my point is that in NO WAY would R&J be considered a romance. not even the amazing Luhrmann version. it's romantic but still not a romance.
to be clear, i dont find R&J romantic. i find the lurhmann version as close as possible to romantic bc claire danes and leonardo dicaprio aka loves of my teen life, but anyway let me not start my romeo and juliet rant at this hour, you get my point (& if not i cant help you)
