I agree that ethnicity has been a problem – ethnic minorities persecuted and even killed. But the fundamental problem is how the state has been configured politically. You can do so in 3 ways: unitary state system, federal and confederal 2/5

Unitary state system (European model), bequeathed to Africa, concentrated a lot of power and decision-making at the capital. Whoever captured power used it to advance interests of his tribe and exclude everybody else. System unsuitable for countries with diverse ethnic groups 3/5

More suitable system is the Confederation --allows for decentralization of power and devolution of authority. This would allow the constituent ethnic groups local autonomy they need “to do their own thing.” Note: all ancient African empires in many kingdoms were Confederacies 4/5
