Thing is, as a journalist, I sacrifice my opinion on non-journalism issues to share gente's stories, voz; to hold to account abuse of power/privilege. I ask ?s, report, write. So I'm asking: When officers kneel on a Black man's neck, when racial disparities persist in prisons⬇️ https://twitter.com/DiannaNanez/status/1319701385357651968
When Latinos, Black gente die at disparate rates of COVID-19, when a government forcibly separates babies from their Brown parents, are we fully examining the role of:
dehumanization/rhetoric/bias/stereotypes/racism/historically unfair journalism/no racial parity in newsrooms?
Reflecting on my privilege as a journalist. Journalism is said to be a first rough draft of history. As an industry, we’ve failed our people & country w/stories that don't fully, equitably, accurately reflect BIPOC, LGBTQ, marginalized communities. @CJR: https://www.cjr.org/analysis/race-media.php
Newsrooms not addressing systemic inequities/racism are failing, harming JOC. We can't change if those in power aren't personally asking JOC: How has systemic racism/bias affected your career, mental health, communities? Are you treated equitably, respected? Why are you leaving?
Without racial parity across every level from new and veteran reporters to leadership posts, the first rough draft of history continues to be wrong, harming our democracy, the communities we serve. There is no accuracy in news coverage without equity, representation in newsrooms.
Our communities deserve better, JOC, LGBTQ journalists, female journalists, historically marginalized journalists, all deserve better now. We need results. Now. I see my fellow JOC & female journalists working w/inequities, disrespect, gaslighting and it breaks my heart.
But here I am after a "diversity" newsroom talk that didn't address systemic racism/bias. Thinking on @RebeccaAguilar's wisdom/ @BermudezWrites: Throw the word diversity into the ocean. I want action, results.
Using my voz to speak truth in my newsroom/lift others/celebrate wins.
Grateful for this #Vision25 mission: "Building Racial Equity in Newsrooms, a catalyst in a social change movement that seeks to build journalistic institutions where newsrooms are actively anti-racist and collaborative, and journalists of color feel like they truly belong."
"Kerner Commission excoriated the journalism industry for its lack of diversity. With racial injustice still potent and deadly and people once again rising up ... we have still failed to diversify our organizations and leadership to adequately represent ... communities we serve."
"Go beyond conversations about diversity and inclusion to work vigorously to build anti-racist organizations that become institutions of belonging. Hold ourselves, and others, accountable to undertake transformational and transparent initiatives to fix institutionalized racism."
