One could have heard British executing ‘Rebels’, the freedom fighters who challenged their rule. But it may be unique that they hanged not only Marudhu Pandiyar brothers but also 500 of their kinsman on this very day 219 years ago without any formal enquiry

Only Duraisamy, 15 year old son of Chinna Marudhu was spared & he was banished to imprisonment in Penang. Such was the vengeance they had on the brave brothers who fought the British gallantly. In fact,Chinna Marudhu was tortured in a ‘Parrot cage’ before being killed by them.

Even in the end, Marudhus surrendered only after British threatened that they will blew the Kalayar Koil temple tower. Strong Sanatani’s they were Marudhu’s couldn’t even take a small crack on the temple they had built & hence gave up their defence.

The brothers led the famous rebellion in 17th century & had alliances with other like minded polygars to uproot British from this land.They had even a small navy force to challenge them in the sea.Their Trichy proclamation was a clarion call to the freedom fighters to join them

Unfortunately some of the traitors foiled this plan. Otherwise history could have taken a different turn. Who knows.

It was fitting that the brothers heads were buried in front of the temple they had built as of they are praying for the welfare of the country, forever.
