Hi :D not an expert and this mostly the things i think about when designing characters rather than actual advice for character design, but i hope its helpful either way [:
First off i wanna with a quick explanation about shape language and a lil bit of color theory, nothing too fancy
My art style is very cartoony so i aply this in the shapes i use for eyes and faces! I also use it when it comes to siluette but u get the idea
I have this sort of chart?? That i use to figure out how to translate a character that im drawing for the first time to my art style [: i always end up mixing the shapes to make the character look more interesting, but remember keep it consistent!!
Tubbo has big eyes and rounded lines bc i see him as more friendly, tommy is full of triangles bc hes pretty chaotic and reckless, willbur is just vibing, philza has straight lines and square pupils bc hes the most grounded of the group++
And techno, like tommy, has a lot of triangles, but this time its bc he could kick ur ass any time, hes dangerous
Same goes for my happy dou designs :D soft, round shapes for bbh to make him look kind and friendly, and a lot of triangles and sharp lines for skeppy to make him look more dynamic, chaotic and playful
I also have designs for the dt but those r not done yet ]:

U dont always have to follow these rules tho!! U can make triangles look charismatic or more soft by playing around with how u place the shapes and contrasting with round lines here and there, plus the colors u use can help to give off the vibes u want [:
Ofc, u can add even more personality to the characters using their clothing!
They dont like a part of their body? Hide it, they r a rly serious person? Some formal clothing might work, they r clumsy? Give em messy hair
Clothing and hair styles help a lot

Btw a thing that helps me a lot its searching up characters that have the vibes im looking for
Basing ur characters off concepts or giving em some kind of theme also helps a lot, makes em look consistent and can help u figure out their personalities
For these two i literally went business rainy cloud and militar/boddy guar deer jddhdj

Putting cultural or symbolic references is also an option and says a lot about the character and their backstory [:
(These r kinda old but i cant find any other examples jsjfdh)

Theres a lot more things i do when designing a character, i do a lot of research and sketch different designs until i get it right, theres also a bunch of things about color theory that r rly important in these things but this thread is long enough hehe [:
Sorry for any typos/awkward wording, english isnt my first language and this is hard to explain even in spanish
Anyway i hope u had fun reading this and it was somehow helpful :D
