The right are idiotic to claim schools are indoctrinating kids w radical communism. Kids are actually being indoctrinated with empire education, to love capitalism & embrace imperialism. They’re being radicalized bc capitalism has failed them & they can’t afford to fucking Iive.

When I went to school on Miami I was learning both English & Spanish & one of the first things my (Latin) teacher taught us was that Christopher Columbus discovered America & was a hero, & settlers were friendly to Natives but natives were hostile. Most of my gen learned that.

The only time we perused anything related to Native Americans was when it was related to white settlers, & U.S building civilizations & promoting democracy & religion for these “poor” less advanced people. The slave trade was taught as an unfortunate means to an end not a wrong.

Manifest Destiny & the Monroe Doctrine were taught as positives of our American altruism. The little I was taught about Malcolm X & Fred Hampton painted them as radical & violent & MLK was reduced to a peaceful preacher who was tragically killed by a lunatic, no mention of gov.

Economics & geography classes always dismissed socialism & communism as fascist, negative & w “it never works.” I also remember nearly every Middle Eastern country painted as terrorists or violent at the very least w no accountability for what we did. Russia was never good.

The Chinese (who helped build our railroads) were violent commies, who had zero freedoms. This is just Americans History. I took AP/gifted/advanced classes my whole life & this is what I was taught. As a history lover I also took European & world for fun & it wasn’t better.

Empire education doesn’t end with the U.S but it’s led with the west & that perspective has literally poisoned the minds of too many people. This is why ppl buy #Russiagate. Why people think communism is bad. Why people don’t care about foreign policy. Education is really it.

When you’re indoctrinated to believe this is the greatest country in the world, it’s easier to look the other way & pretend everyone else is the problem. It’s easier to blame immigrants, to pretend racism is gone. It’s easier to support capitalism as this country falls apart.

That’s by design. Finding out that those we’ve lauded are often the bad guys isn’t easy. Never forget it’s okay to learn something new & realize you were wrong. We’ve all been there. None of us were born knowing everything we know now. But admitting that is the biggest challenge.
