The good, the expected, the bad, and the ugly of Jimmy G's week 6 game vs the Rams, a thread. 1/? #49ers
The good. 1 throw. And it was a big one on "Chevy shadow hash." Kittle running a "chevy" route (6-step post route) against cover 0. Ball placed well on a receiver in stride against a 0 blitz.
2) The expected
A common concept against 2-high coverages is a dig route with some kind of short stop route underneath to hold the seam defender. Although this looks like some kind weird single high rotation. Wide open throw from a clean pocket. Nothing else special about it.

3) The expected continued. Garoppolo hits Kittle running a drift route off play action. Drift is run behind the linebackers who get pulled by the run action. Deebo's sift across holds the flat defender, giving JG a huge window. Clean pocket, clean throw. Basic quarterbacking.
The bad
This was actually a completion but poor placement that took away the ability for more yards after the catch. They're running "rider" (yankee) basic day 1 install stuff. JG throws the deep crosser, but it's behind Bourne. Bourne has to stop his momentum to catch it.

He should throw this pass where the green is, wide open space. Instead he threw it behind him so those 3 defenders who were previously out of the play now have a chance to limit his run after the catch because he has to stop running. Bad.
Going back to "the expected". This just a quarterback taking what the offense gives him, a wide open throw. Basic stuff all NFL QB's can do.
The bad continued.
Ground ball at the feet of the running back. Didn't Beathard throw one of these against Miami and got shit for it?
Garoppolo was off target on at least 7 or 8 passes in this game and some were within 5 yards. Not ideal.

5) The ugly
Just as basic stick flat concept to the left and JG sails high and to the left of the Kittle. It's wide open

More ugly
JG needed to wait a hair longer for Kittle to come open, instead he promptly checks it down and then doesn't even lead McKinnon, pass is behind him. Not an ideal end of half 2 minute drill. Just takes more yards off the board. Maybe could've gotten in scoring range.
