Physics A-Level teachers! Is anyone else unhappy with the way magnetic fields is taught? Conceptually students struggle with archaic terms and the whole set up. I know Maxwell's equations could be used but none would understand the terms. No obvious alternative but still irks.
What adds to the confusion is that we mention that electricity and magnetism are coupled in electromagnetism but to most students the obvious coupling would seem to be between electric and gravitational fields. It is a minefield at this level of study.
When I teach magnetism I feel like Catweazle trying to explain it. Lots of electrickery...
It is keenly felt when I try to explain transformers. The explanation in all the newer books I have read is mysterious. The elephant in the room is inductance. Why that isn't in the core is beyond me. If only to mention the Henry!
Maybe it can all be explained using the magnetic energy store @charlesmtracy ? 😜
