Watching that Mary Queen of Scots film. John Knox - excellently played by David Tennant - is meant to be the bad guy but he speaks the truth to power, objects to foreign domination of his county and encourages the people to have faith in themselves and to reject the rich 🧐
I really feel we’ve been denied the Knox biopic and or Covenanters action movie that Scotland clearly merits. Perhaps a five part BBC Scotland channel series from Reformation to 1692 would be good.
An important dimension the film doesn’t capture is England’s position as a pariah state in Europe at this time. It was allied with the Ottomans against Chistian Europe and sanctioned piracy against the leading powers of the day. Mary represented a mainstream trend by comparison.
